I was thinking of some free software for small businesses, but was not sure how they make money. What options are there to benefit other than the sale of the software?
The position of the software, in hopes of filling some of the market in order to be bought by a larger company? Consult and implement customized solutions for customers in general? Donations?

No, you can not even get anything for nothing and expect money to fall from the sky. Business does not work that way (), perhaps faith.
Why do you give it away? If things go well, would be a value or a person, even if it were free. Most entrepreneurs will be the product of a trick that you, and then demand money for the alias of the customer "consultation". You are better off, asks a price competitive, free market and customer support solutions for your company to be adjusted.
No, "the market" if you do nothing to dollars from the large holding companies. All the big companies will not "buy" a company that is no advantage, since they did not pay for their product. This makes no sense. Most companies will study the resources to have your products and just not better.
Companies do not require donations, not just non-profit organizations.
